Limited formats use decks made by players during the format from a limited card pool.[citation needed] The two most common Limited formats are sealed deck and booster draft. Limited was featured as rules card 6 of 9 in the Magic 2011 set.[citation needed]

In sealed deck tournaments, each player receives six booster packs (each containing 15 cards), or a 75-card Tournament Pack (containing 45 cards and 30 basic lands) and two booster packs from which to build their deck.

In a booster draft, players each receive three booster packs of 15 cards. After being seated around a table, each player simultaneously opens one booster pack, selects a single card, and then passes the rest to the next player over. After all players have drafted fifteen cards, they each open their second pack, and drafting continues (sometimes in reverse order during the second pack).

In both formats, the player constructs a deck of at least forty cards from his or her pool. All the cards that the player chose not to play in main deck are considered as sideboard for the deck.

In sealed deck and booster drafts, players are given opportunities to place as many basic lands as they need in their deck, usually with organizers supplying a stock of basic lands.
