Divvy is an unnamed mechanic on cards that lets one player separate a number of cards into two piles and then lets the other player chooses what to do with them. [1]

Description

For example, Death or Glory is a sorcery that lets you divide all creature cards in your graveyard into two piles. Your opponent then decides which pile is removed from the game and which pile returns to play. Fact or Fiction is the most popular of the divvy cards as you reveal the top five cards of your library, your opponent seperates them into two face-up piles and you decide which pile goes into your hand while the other pile goes into your graveyard.

Although the term "divvy cards" hadn't been coined yet, Phyrexian Portal from Alliances was the first. Six "divvy cards" were printed in Invasion, one in Time Spiral and another one in Shards of Alara. Jace, Architect of Thought, from Return to Ravnica, has a second loyalty ability that is a divvy ability.

Rulings

  • When cards are separated into piles, they don't leave the zone they're in (unless the effect says to move them to a different zone). For example, if a divvy card affects creatures in play, they don't leave play. No leaves-play or comes-into-play triggered abilities will trigger.
  • The affected cards stay separated into piles only for the duration of the effect. Once the spell is done resolving, the cards' controller can mix them together again.
