A Tutor is a spell which searches your library for another spell.

Description[edit | edit source]

Usually a tutor searches for any spell but it can be limited to search for specific spell types. [Black]] has the most tutor spells being capable of searching for any card. However it is surpassed by green when searching specifically for the card type creatures or (basic) lands. You do not have to find the card and put it in your library. If you do choose to find cards, you must reveal those cards to all players.

R&D has stopped creating tutoring keywords like transmute and transfigure.[1] They don’t like to do too much tutoring, as it can lead to repetition of play, where games play out too similarly. [2]

A special kind of tutor are the Wishes which may searches cards outside of the game.

Rules[edit | edit source]

Contents

From the Comprehensive Rules (Aether Revolt (January 20, 2017))

  • 701.17b If a player is searching a hidden zone for cards with a stated quality, such as a card with a certain card type or color, that player isn’t required to find some or all of those cards even if they’re present in that zone.

Example: Splinter says “Exile target artifact. Search its controller’s graveyard, hand, and library for all cards with the same name as that artifact and exile them. That player then shuffles his or her library.” A player casts Splinter targeting Howling Mine (an artifact). Howling Mine’s controller has another Howling Mine in her graveyard and two more in her library. Splinter’s controller must find the Howling Mine in the graveyard, but may choose to find zero, one, or two of the Howling Mines in the library.
